According to official reports, 80% of the Iranian population lives below the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/poor-children\/\">poverty line<\/a>.\u00a0 Children in rural areas are the most affected by this problem.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/fundamental-rights-2\/health\/\">Health Care<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Article 24 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child recognizes the \u201cright of the child to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/fundamental-rights-2\/health\/\">health<\/a> and to facilities for the treatment of illness and rehabilitation of health.\u201d\u00a0 Iran has a very high <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/infant-mortality\/\">mortality rate<\/a> for children under the age of 5.\u00a0 Premature birth, pneumonia, pelvic congestion, and diarrhea are the main causes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/infant-mortality\/\">infant mortality<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Although maternal health care has improved in the last few years, malnutrition is still a serious problem among mothers and children, especially in rural areas.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-52023 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/shutterstock_1368263135-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"265\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/shutterstock_1368263135-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/shutterstock_1368263135-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/shutterstock_1368263135-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/shutterstock_1368263135-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/shutterstock_1368263135-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/shutterstock_1368263135-830x623.jpg 830w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/shutterstock_1368263135-230x173.jpg 230w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/shutterstock_1368263135-350x263.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/shutterstock_1368263135-480x360.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 265px) 100vw, 265px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/right-to-education\/\">Education<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/right-to-education\/\">Education<\/a> is free and required up to age 11.\u00a0 In rural areas, however, school attendance is low, particularly among girls.\u00a0 The most far-flung reaches of the country still require numerous improvements in infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/nondiscrimination\/\">Right to Non-Discrimination<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Iranian society, men enjoy a higher status than women.\u00a0 The Iranian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/right-to-education\/\">education <\/a>system propagates the religious belief that women are inferior beings.\u00a0 Among other things, children are taught that women belong to men, who have the right to punish their wives if they disobey them.\u00a0 Women are also seen as a potential source of corruption.<\/p>\n<p>In spite of this, females have actually outnumbered males in university courses in recent years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Minors in the Judicial System<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Iran is one of only five countries (along with Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Yemen) that allows the death penalty for individuals under the age of 18.\u00a0 Detained children often do not have the right to due process and are condemned to death \u2013 more and more often.\u00a0 Poor children also do not have sufficient financial means to cover their own judicial fees and expenses.<\/p>\n<p>The rate of minors sentenced to death has risen under the current president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Authorities continue to execute children even under pressure from human rights organizations that denounce the practice.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/child-marriage\/\">Child Marriage<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to Iranian law, girls must be at least 13 years old to marry, whereas boys must be at least 15.\u00a0 However, many young girls are often given or sold in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/child-marriage\/\">marriage <\/a>much earlier, especially in rural areas for economic reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Worse still, are the reports of young Iranian girls being sold or forcefully married off to Pakistanis who sexually exploit them.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/child-trafficking\/\">Trafficking<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Iran is a virtual revolving door for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/child-prostitution\/\">prostitution<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/child-trafficking\/\">child trafficking<\/a>.\u00a0 Many Iranian children are sold into the sex trade in Pakistan, Turkey, the UAE, Bahrain, or Europe.\u00a0 Young girls and boys between the ages of 9 and 14 can be sold for USD$15-20.\u00a0 In Iran, the principal buyers are usually truck drivers, religious leaders, and Afghani immigrant workers.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, children from neighboring countries, especially Afghanistan and Pakistan, cross the border in increasing numbers to work in brothels in southern Iran.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/street-children\/\">Street children<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-52022 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/shutterstock_1718926753-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"304\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/shutterstock_1718926753-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/shutterstock_1718926753-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/shutterstock_1718926753-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/shutterstock_1718926753-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/shutterstock_1718926753-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/shutterstock_1718926753-830x553.jpg 830w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/shutterstock_1718926753-230x153.jpg 230w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/shutterstock_1718926753-350x233.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/shutterstock_1718926753-480x320.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/shutterstock_1718926753-272x182.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 304px) 100vw, 304px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/street-children\/\">Street children<\/a> have become a serious concern in Iran.\u00a0 Most of these children are not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/orphans\/\">orphans<\/a>, but usually have drug-addicted parents, which forces them to live in the streets.\u00a0 Others are children of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/displaced-children\/\">refugees<\/a> or unemployed parents, which forces the children to work to help support their families.<\/p>\n<p>There are currently an estimated 200,000 children living in the streets. They sleep in abandoned buildings, shipping containers, or vehicles and must find work in order to fulfill their own needs or those of their families.<\/p>\n<p>Vulnerable and unsupervised, these Iranian children are easy prey for adult predators who take any opportunity to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/abuse\/\">abuse<\/a> them. More than 60% of these girls have been victims of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/abuse\/\">sexual abuse<\/a> within the first week of living in the streets.\u00a0 Every six days, a girl is raped and killed in Tehran.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/child-labour\/\">Child Labour<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An estimated 14% of Iranian children are forced to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/child-labour\/\">work<\/a> in dangerous and unsanitary conditions. These children usually work in the streets, in automobile or rug factories, or in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/child-prostitution\/\">sex industry<\/a>.
