Congenital Heart Diseases<\/span><\/h2>\n

Many of the children treated in the Paediatric Cardiology Department at\u00a0Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital are born with a congenital\u00a0heart disease. Congenital heart\u00a0diseases are among the most common, severe birth\u00a0defects for newborns and are a\u00a0major cause of premature death\u00a0(2). There is a\u00a0range of different\u00a0types of defects that affect the structure and function of\u00a0the heart of a newborn, including\u00a0those that may not directly pose a threat to\u00a0the child\u2019s life and those that require\u00a0immediate surgery\u00a0(3). While some\u00a0heart defects can be detected pre-birth, others may\u00a0only be diagnosed after\u00a0birth. Timely diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent\u00a0illness,\u00a0disability and ultimately the death of a child. Yet in regions where access to\u00a0healthcare is limited, such as war-torn Syria or the occupied Palestinian\u00a0territory,\u00a0diagnosis and treatment of a child with a congenital heart disease is\u00a0likely to be delayed\u00a0or even missed. For example, children who are born and\u00a0live in the occupied Palestinian\u00a0territory have difficulties to access\u00a0healthcare. Firstly, there is a lack of physicians,\u00a0particularly doctors who are\u00a0specialized in cardiology, in the West Bank and Gaza Strip,\u00a0and secondly,\u00a0patients who live in these territories require a security permit to access care\u00a0in Israel which is a time-consuming procedure and is not granted in all cases\u00a0(4).<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

“Healing Hearts”<\/span><\/h2>\n

Despite the existing barriers and\u00a0ongoing crisis, the continued collaboration\u00a0between doctors at Hadassah Ein Kerem\u00a0Hospital advocates for the fact that children are not\u00a0to be blamed for the\u00a0situation they are born into and that if they need treatment\u00a0they should\u00a0receive it. To be able to enhance the access to life-saving healthcare\u00a0services\u00a0for all children in the occupied Palestinian territory, Palestinian doctors are\u00a0trained and all the doctors hope that a specialized center for heart surgery will be established in the occupied Palestinian territory in the not too distant\u00a0future.<\/span><\/p>\n

A special programme for operating on the Palestinian children and training Palestinian doctors was set up in collaboration with Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital by a French NGO “A Heart for Peace” 13 years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n

To document the action by the doctors\u00a0who go beyond differences, hatred and\u00a0conflict for children\u00b4s survival, a\u00a0documentary is going to be made by the film\u00a0director Katya Chelli. This\u00a0documentary will shed light on the families and\u00a0caregivers who accompany their\u00a0children and the health staff who care for them.\u00a0The film will deliver a\u00a0message of solidarity and hope for those living in conflict\u00a0and under\u00a0occupation.<\/span><\/p>\n
