International Day of Peace, 21 September 2019,\nwith the theme \u2018Climate Action for Peace\u2019 aims to promote peace worldwide by platforming\nthe importance of combatting climate change on the 20th anniversary of the UN\nResolution on the Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace.<\/strong>\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n

World Peace Day in a Nutshell<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is possible to achieve our goals, but we need decisions, political will and transformational policies to allow us to still live in peace with our own climate.\u201d <\/em><\/p>Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres, (United Nations, 15 May 2019)<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Commonly known as World Peace Day, the\nInternational Day of Peace is devoted to strengthening ideas of peace around\nthe world<\/strong>. This year the focus on climate action calls for the fulfilment\nof Sustainable Development Goal 13. The goal stipulates the lowering of\ngreenhouse emissions, building of resilience and improving of education on\nclimate<\/strong> change as well as green solutions such as renewable energy and\nclean technologies (United Nations, 2019). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United Nations\u2019 Climate Action Summit\nconvenes on 23 September and will focus on plans to accelerate the Paris\nAgreement\u2019s implementation. Crucially, scrutiny will be placed by the UN Summit\non the industrial sectors that cause the most green house gas emissions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposal for World Peace Day this year recognises the integral link between environmental and human rights<\/strong>. The aim is to consolidate the wellbeing of our planet with the wellbeing of our species by encouraging political action and responsible global developments in favour of environmental sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Young\npeople are key actors for peace<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Children and young people are pivotal actors\nfor peace and climate protection. Young people play a central role in raising\nawareness, supporting renewable energy, adopting environmentally-friendly\npractises, promoting sustainable lifestyles and running educational programmes\n(United Nations, 2019). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, a Student Observance is to be <\/strong>live-streamed<\/a> on 20 September<\/strong> from the United Nations Headquarters. Young\npeople are to showcase their projects and initiatives to combat climate change,\nspeaking to the drive of many young people who continue to make promising steps\ntowards the mitigation and prevention of environmental disasters (United\nNations, 2019).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Children are the future of peace and environmental protection. The wellbeing of our planet is in their hands, and we must work to the best of our ability in order to empower and enable young people<\/strong> in their efforts towards peace and sustainability. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Humanium supports Climate Action for Peace<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Protecting our planet earth for the coming\ngenerations is a crucial responsibility. Humanium\u2019s projects in promotion of children\u2019s\nrights<\/a> are\ncurrently situated in Rwanda<\/a> with local partner AVSI<\/a>, and in Madhya Pradesh in India<\/a> in partnership with Hand in Hand India<\/a>. In Madhya Pradesh, we are helping to build a Residential\nSpecial Training Centre for 50 girls<\/strong> at risk of forced labour which we are\nimmensely pleased to report is now successfully up and running, with 30 more\ngirls to be housed in the weeks to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
