Accordingly, our respective Governments, through representatives assembled in the city of San Francisco, who have exhibited their full powers found to be in good and due form, have agreed to the present Charter of the United Nations and do hereby establish an international organization to be known as the United Nations.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In San Francisco, on 26 June 1945, the United Nations Charter was signed following the United Nations Conference on International Organization. In its resolution on the matter, the General Assembly stated that &#8220;the anniversary of the United Nations should be an occasion for Governments and peoples to reaffirm their faith in the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations.&#8221; (UN General Assembly Resolution 2782(XXVI), 1971) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/shutterstock_404379430.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30165\" width=\"367\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/shutterstock_404379430.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/shutterstock_404379430-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/shutterstock_404379430-768x510.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/shutterstock_404379430-830x551.jpg 830w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/shutterstock_404379430-230x153.jpg 230w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/shutterstock_404379430-350x232.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/shutterstock_404379430-480x319.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/shutterstock_404379430-272x182.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 367px) 100vw, 367px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, on the 74<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the Charter, and by\nextension of the United Nations, is therefore an opportunity to recall the\nobjectives of the Charter in the face of the new challenges of the 21<sup>st<\/sup>\ncentury to, in particular, maintain international peace and security, as well\nas to guarantee preventative diplomacy, mediation and peacebuilding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this context, United Nations Secretary General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres has\nannounced that the UN will undergo reform in order to adapt it to new\nchallenges and make it &#8220;focused more on people and less on process&#8221;\n(Ant\u00f3nio Guterres to the UN Security Council, 2018).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the challenges?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Officially\nthere are three major challenges:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Climate change<\/strong>: certainly the most significant challenge of our time and for the future. It is in this context that the Climate Action Summit took place on 23 September last year, in order to highlight the challenges and the role played by States and companies in particular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/shutterstock_630429824.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/shutterstock_630429824.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/shutterstock_630429824-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/shutterstock_630429824-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/shutterstock_630429824-830x554.jpg 830w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/shutterstock_630429824-230x153.jpg 230w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/shutterstock_630429824-350x233.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/shutterstock_630429824-480x320.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/shutterstock_630429824-272x182.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Sustainable development<\/strong>: Here we must mention the 2030 Agenda, the programme for achieving sustainable development by 2030. This is an agenda for peace, people and the planet, and for gender equality to ensure a transition to sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Technological innovation<\/strong>: The pace of technological advance has accelerated over recent years and technology is developing in all domains: health, administration, the military, education, agriculture, etc. We should, in the context of the Rights of the Child, take note of the Committee on the Rights of the Child\u2019s <em>General Comment on children\u2019s rights in relation to the digital environment<\/em> (2019).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, the day of 24 October is also important because it should remind us that peace is never achieved definitively and that it must be maintained. Likewise, we should recognize the importance of promoting the UN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/convention\/text\/\">Convention on the Rights of the Child<\/a>, all the more as it celebrates its 30<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary on 20 November this year. The challenges affecting children\u2019s rights have changed considerably since its adoption, such as climate change, which has grown in scale and effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the context of the Rights of the Child, Humanium works to protect and reinforce these rights on a daily basis at the international and local levels, in particular through different projects to support children worldwide, as well as through its activities to raise awareness of children\u2019s rights and through its legal advice and its many partners.\u00a0 Humanium is a member of Child Rights Connect, the Geneva-based organization that drafted the Convention on the Rights of the Child 30 years ago. This NGO coordinates with the United Nations Human Rights System to make the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child as effective as possible through all its stakeholders. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But above all, Humanium is nothing without you or your support.
