The International Day for\nthe Elimination of Violence Against Women &#8211; on 25th November 2019 &#8211;\ncommemorates the impacts of this violence, and provides a chance to work\ntowards the eradication of gender based violence in our world today.<\/strong>\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Understanding Violence Against Women and Girls<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cViolence against women and girls is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in our world today.\u201d<\/em><\/p><cite> (United Nations, 2019) <\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The crime of violence against women and girls (VAWG)\ncontinues to be amongst the most unreported crimes worldwide due to the rife <strong>impunity,\nstigma and overwhelming silence<\/strong> within which it finds itself embroiled.\nWhen crimes of VAWG <em>are<\/em> reported, this can lead to reprisals against the\nsurvivors, reactions of shaming or victim-blaming, and even rejection from\ntheir families or communities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following forms of violence comprise key areas to be addressed on the road to VAWG elimination: intimate partner violence, sexual violence and harassment, human trafficking, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/genital-mutilation\/\">female genital mutilation<\/a> (FGM) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/child-marriage\/\">child marriage<\/a> (United Nations, 2019). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>VAWG can, however, take on many forms apart from those afore-mentioned, as it continues to adapt and evolve itself, and resists any definitive definition. It is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/violence\/\">violence<\/a> which is personal as well as structural and institutional; cyber as well as physical and psychological. This patriarchal oppression manifested by diverse violence heightens the vulnerability of women and girls across the planet, so that the impacts of other human emergencies such as poverty, conflict and forced displacement are compounded by VAGW and gender-based oppression. Combatting this on a daily basis with our <strong>feminist actions, words and ideologies<\/strong> is a key aspect of resistance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Statistical Overview of Violence Against Women <\/em><\/strong>(United Nations, 2019)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>1 in 3 women and\ngirls experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime;<\/li><li>Only 52% of women\nmarried or in a union freely make their own decisions about sexual relations,\ncontraceptive use and health care;<\/li><li>Worldwide, almost\n750 million women and girls alive today were married before their 18th\nbirthday; <\/li><li>200 million women\nand girls have undergone female genital mutilation (FGM)<\/li><li>1 in 2 women\nkilled worldwide were killed by their partners or family in 2012; while only 1\nout of 20 men were killed under similar circumstances;<\/li><li>71% of all human\ntrafficking victims worldwide are women and girls, and 3 out of 4 of these\nwomen and girls are sexually exploited;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Legal Mechanisms of Protection<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cViolence against women is as serious a cause of death and incapacity among women of reproductive age as cancer, and a greater cause of ill health than traffic accidents and malaria combined.\u201d<\/em><\/p><cite> <em>(United Nations, 2019)<\/em> <\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/two-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30895\" width=\"261\" height=\"261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/two-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/two-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/two-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/two-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/two-830x830.png 830w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/two-230x230.png 230w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/two-350x350.png 350w, https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/two-480x480.png 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 261px) 100vw, 261px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>There are diverse legal frameworks which exist to protect women and girls from violence and discrimination. The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women and its Optional Protocol, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights&nbsp;and the&nbsp;International Covenant on Social, Economic, and Cultural Rights&nbsp;form the core elements of this international framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rights of children are upheld in particular by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/convention\/adapted-for-children\/\">Convention on the Rights of the Child<\/a> &#8211; which celebrates its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/the-30th-anniversary-of-the-un-convention-on-the-rights-of-the-child\/\">30th anniversary<\/a> this year &#8211; and which enshrines the rights of young girls and boys to not be discriminated against (art. 2), to not be subjected to violence (art. 19) or sexual abuse (art. 34), as well as their rights to life and wellbeing (arts. 3, 6). Humanium fervently believes that the protection of all such rights is a crucial step on the <strong>path to the absolute elimination of violence against women and girls<\/strong>. Said protection is, therefore, precisely what we are working to achieve. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Standing Together Against Gender Based\nViolence<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Humanium exists to protect and fulfil the rights of\nchildren. At Humanium, we consider violence against women and girls to be an\nabuse of the utmost gravity and peril. We have thus chosen to highlight the\nInternational Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women&nbsp; and Girls, not only because of the crucial\nimportance that combatting said violence poses to our global society now and\ngoing forward, but because of the painful under-acknowledgment of the crimes it\nentails and the ever-present, immeasurably damaging silence which persists\naround them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Breaking the silence<\/strong> and declaring opposition not only in theory, but in practise, to VAWG is a key social responsibility for all global actors &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/\">Humanium<\/a> included. Our project in Madhya\nPradesh, for example, has included the building of a Residential\nSpecial Training Centre for girls at risk of forced labour.\nThis training centre is now successfully open and running with 60 girls safely\nhoused and educated, protected from forced labour, and the loss of childhoods\nto dangerous and exploitative environments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You can contribute towards the fulfilment of <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanium.org\/en\/fundamental-rights\/\">children\u2019s rights<\/a> around the world by participating in Humanium\u2019s efforts to protect these rights.
