“The desire for our children’s well-being has always been the most universally cherished aspiration of mankind. There is no task more important than building a world in which all of our children can grow up to realize their full potential, in health, peace and dignity.”

Kofi Annan

This quotation from Kofi Annan marked the opening conference of the 79th session of the Committee on the Rights of the Child, which is held from September 17th to October 5th in Geneva. The Humanium team will be attending the session throughout the next weeks, meeting and discussing with other children’s rights defenders and experts from the civil society and the international level such as WHO, ILO, UNICEF and Child Rights Connect.

To co-create a world where children’s rights are respected, protected and fulfilled, Humanium is convinced that we need to work together, hand in hand, on the local, national and international level.

What is the Committee on the Rights of the Child ?

The Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) is a UN treaty-based body, composed of 18 independent experts, which supervises the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (Convention) and of the two Optional Protocols to the Convention by its State parties.

The Committee holds three sessions per year in Geneva. During each session, the Committee reviews the reports submitted by the State parties, discusses the information with the national government and makes recommendations (“ concluding observations”) in order to improve the situation of children’s rights.

The CRC monitors the progress in each member state through a reporting cycle. Every state that ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child has to present regular reports on the situation of the rights of the child and the respect of the Convention in their country. The first report is submitted two years after ratification and then every five years.

During this ongoing 79th session, the State parties Mauritania, El Salvador, Lao People Democratic Republic, Niger, Benin and Saudi Arabia will be under review.

The General Day of Discussion : “Protecting and empowering children as human rights defenders”!

Every two years, at its September session, the Committee holds a Day of General Discussion (DGD) focused on a specific provision of the Convention on the Rights of the Child or a related topic, in order to develop more detailed recommendations for the State parties.

This year, the DGD will take place on September 28th on the subject “protecting and empowering children as human rights defenders”. In preparation of the DGD and for children’s voices to be heard at the UN, Child Rights Connect has created a Children’s Advisory Team composed of 20 children from 19 countries.
