With these words, on September 26, 1924, the League of Nations adopted the Geneva Declaration. This Declaration on the Rights of the Child is the first international statement that recognizes specific rights to the children and pointing out the responsibilities of adults.
On November 20, 1989, the General Assembly of the United Nations unanimously adopted the International Convention on the Rights of the Child. This text aims to improve the situation of children in the world and its implementation is a common goal to all humanity.
If this text is a reference and a common ideal, it is still far from being a universal reality for children around the world. The most fundamental rights are violated in most countries, and even in the most economically developed countries, all children do not enjoy the same rights.
Poverty remains the main factor of violation of the rights of the child and seriously hampers their rights to life, health, water, food or education. In the least affected by poverty countries, children usually have the chance to enjoy these fundamental rights, but many children remain victims of violence, abuse or discrimination.
