One for all, all for the children of Deheishe

Take a back courtyard, perform major renovations, plant a few seeds, add a bit of paint and there you have it: the area will soon be ready for a basketball hoop, goal posts and a net for ball games and of course the great delight of the children of the Deheishe refugee camp.

SONY DSCThe project, supported by Humanium and run by the Palestinian association Karama, consists of creating an area for games and sports in the back courtyard of the Karama centre. The centre itself is located in the Deheishe refugee camp, in the municipality of Bethlehem in the West Bank.

Backyard_november2013 (1)The Karama association proposes numerous activities, both educational and recreational, to children, adolescents, young adults and women in the camp. Its objective is to “help them forget the daily difficulties arising from their status as refugees.”

Through this project, Karama and Humanium hope to offer the children a space for relaxation, games and sport, which are rare in the camp.

Under the motto “one for all, all for one!”, team sports enable the children to build friendships, unwind, challenge themselves and gain self-confidence. In addition to this, the recreation facilities enable the children to expend energy, which in turn should help them concentrate better at school, thus improving their grades.

Sports are also synonymous with mobility and freedom of movement, two rights which are denied in Palestine due to the wall and the obstacles erected by Israel.
