Self-Help Groups in Annathur

Posted on Posted in Microfinance

A self-help group comprises on average 12 to 20 women coming from a similar socio economic environment.

Attention is paid in particular to the poorest and most ostracized women in the village, whose family live on less than 2 dollars per day. The bonds created within the group improve their self-confidence.

Self-help groups are the basis on which the village collective activities are founded. Before being able to set up a project aiming at sustainable development in the village of Annathur, it was essential to do some groundwork so as to have the means for social mobilization, and be able to rely on dependable people who would also be important actors for the collective activities. When this project started in Annathur, it was following 4 years of bond-weaving and interaction between the women of the first 12 self-help groups.

Contrary to what one may think, before asking Humanium to become involved along with them, our local partners were already very active in Annathur and were putting in place the conditions for a sustainable development of the village.

The extra help Humanium brings, especially to women, leads to an increase of the activities, training, microcredit, entrepreneurship… Since July, 5 new self-groups have been set up.

All these women are the fulcrum and pillar of strength to their children’s future.
