In the village of Sankarapuram, India, the child day-care center (Anganwadi) has been renovated with the support of Humanium in 2009.

“I used to hate coming to the anganwadi. It was in a mess. It used to stink too. We had nothing to play with. My parents used to force me to go to the anganwadi to eat the mid-day meal that was served,” says Murugan, a six -year -old boy from Sankarapuram in Kancheepuram District.

Before the intervention of our operational partner Hand in Hand, these were the feelings about the local anganwadi centre – a government-run day care centre. The dilapidated anganwadi in Sankarapuram was refurbished in 2009. The anganwadi received a new coat of paint with colourful and informative pictures painted on the walls. New toys and learning aids were also provided.

“The attendance in the anganwadi has improved tremendously. The children are enthusiastic and are showing a lot of interest to learn,” says the anganwadi teacher.

Banumathi, the mother of a child studying in the anganwadi says, “I am happy that the anganwadi has been spruced-up. My child is learning a lot more than she used to. She also enjoys playing with the new toys and loves to read the numbers painted on the wall.”
